The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Soccer team fell 4-1 to Port Allegany on Saturday, September 10.
The Lady Gators got a quick start on the morning and scored not even two minutes into the game on a goal from Shaylee Caulkins. Autumn Buchsenschutz later increased the score to 2-0 with 11:27 left in the first half on a penalty kick.
Port Allegany added two more goals in the second half, both by Buchsenschutz. The first came with 33:24 on the clock and then at 28:55 to make the score 4-0.
The Lady Hornets avoided the shutout on a direct kick by sophomore Emma Poirier with 10:33 remaining to make it 4-1.
"The girls fought hard and I'm so proud of them," said head coach TJ Freeman. "The played much better than our previous game and they're really coming together as a team. We had some unlucky breaks and missed opportunities but it was a good game."
Port Allegany took 15 shots on goal compared to Wellsboro's 6. Wellsboro edged Port Allegany 4-2 in corner kicks, and junior Kailee Clymer recorded 11 saves in goal.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets' record to 0-2 (0-1 NTL). The team will be back in action later this afternoon against Sayre at Mansfield University.
