The Wellsboro Girls Basketball team came home with a silver medal as they fell 56-42 to Mount Carmel in the District IV AA championship game.
The Lady Hornets were up early, but Mount Carmel's outside shooting propelled them to an 11-7 lead late in the first, but buckets by senior Sarah Ingerick and freshman Julia Smith tied it up for Wellsboro at 11-11 at the end of the quarter.
The game got away from Wellsboro in the second quarter as they turned the ball over 20 total times in the first half, with many of those coming in the quarter. Mount Carmel broke the game open as they scored 22 points and went on a 14-0 run at one point to take a 33-18 lead at the half.
Wellsboro managed to cut into Mount Carmel's lead in the third as senior Jada Jackson scored 8 points in the quarter to cut it to 41-29 heading into the fourth, where Mount Carmel held on for the win.
Jackson finished with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Ingerick ended the night with 12 points, sophomore Lizzie Poirier had 11, Smith and junior Janessa Davis finished with 2 points each, and junior Jessica Grab pitched in with a point.
Wellsboro's season will continue next Friday in the PIAA State playoffs, with the opponent, time, and location to be determined.
