The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team improved to 2-1 on the year with a 72-21 win over Canton on Tuesday, December 13.
The Hornets lead from the opening tip to the final buzzer and played much of the game with the mercy rule in action. The Hornets jumped out to a 23-2 first quarter lead with senior Alden Weiner having the hot hand with 7 early points. The Hornets kept the pedal down in the second quarter and outscored Canton 21-9 to take a 44-11 halftime lead.
Wellsboro went on to outscore Canton 28-10 in the second half to pick up the first NTL win of the season.
Four Hornets scored in double figures, with Alden Weiner leading the team with 12 points. Junior Dalton Prough and sophomore Andrew Brelo both scored 11 and junior Collin Pietropola added 10. Senior Jacob Singer pitched in with 9 points, junior Nic Ingerick had 7, and senior Brandon Lamphier finished with 4.
Sophomore Brandyn Tuttle had 8 rebounds on the night, Prough and Singer each grabbed 5, and sophomore Holden Kennedy hauled in 4.
Wellsboro won the JV game 71-14 behind 11 points from Brelo, 9 points from freshman Billy Lechler, and 7 points each from sophomores Tanner Button and Austin Young.
Up next for Wellsboro is an away date with Williamson on Thursday, December 15.
