The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team picked up their fifth straight victory with a 6-3 win over Northeast Bradford on Tuesday, May 17.
The Hornets picked up where they left off from last week which saw them go 4-0 to get back above .500 and qualify for Districts.
"Baseball is a grind and sometimes you can't over analyze your performance," said head coach Philip Prough. "You just have get through the grind of a game. Tonight was that kind of a night. Our batting wasn't as crisp as it could have been. We were caught lunging on slower pitches.
"The boys are playing steady, consistent baseball," continued Prough. "We made some base running outs tonight being aggressive, but I can accept that. Overall, I'm pleased with tonight and how we're playing."
After a scoreless first inning, Wellsboro got on the board with 5 runs in the second inning. Sophomore Dalton Prough, senior Dawson Prough, freshman Cam Tennis, senior Larry Walters, and sophomore Johnny Rowland all scored in the inning to put Wellsboro up 5-0.
NEB got two runs back in the sixth inning to close the score to 5-2, but Wellsboro answered back with a run from senior James Mundy in the sixth to make it 5-2. NEB added their final run in the top of the seventh.
Senior Joe Allen picked up his fifth win of the year as he pitched 5 scoreless innings with 4 hits and 3 strikeouts. Dalton Prough and Dawson Prough each pitched an inning in relief, with Dalton giving up 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits, and Dawson giving up an earned run on one hit.
"Joe has another solid outing for us tonight," Prough concluded. "He was in control and allowed us to get a lead which gave us the chance to get some mound work for Dalton and Dawson."
Dalton Prough was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI's to lead the Hornets at the plate. Dawson Prough and senior Nick Tremper were both 1-for-3, Tennis was 1-for-2 with a double, and sophomore Brent English was 1-for-1 with a double and RBI. Dawson Prough and Allen also added RBI's on the night.
The win improves the Hornets' record to 11-7. The team will hold Senior Night on Thursday, May 19 against South Williamsport.
