The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team broke a three-game losing streak with an 11-1 win over Canton on Monday, May 9.
The Hornets scored 2 runs in the first inning as sophomore Dalton Prough and senior Dawson Prough scored after Dalton was hit by a pitch and Dawson hit a double to get on base. Seniors Nick Tremper and Joe Allen both had RBI's in their at-bats to make it 2-0 Wellsboro after the first inning.
After a scoreless second, Wellsboro added 3 more runs in the third as Dawson Prough, Allen, and freshman Cam Tennis all scored to make it 5-0, then the Hornets added 6 runs in the fourth to put the game out of reach. Dalton Prough, Dawson Prough, Tremper, Tennis, senior James Mundy, and sophomore Johnny Rowland all scored in the inning.
Canton's lone run came in the fifth inning.
"I was pleased tonight by how we came back from the long week, last week," said head coach Philip Prough. "Our seniors showed the leadership we needed. James hit the ball well tonight. He's our hardest working player and it paid off tonight. Joe pitched another good game. And Dawson provided offense as he often does. Defensively it was the best infield showing we've had this year. So overall, it was a solid game for us."
Senior Dawson Prough was 3-for-3 (all doubles) at the plate with 3 runs scored for the Hornets, to give him 23 hits on the year and 113 for his career. Mundy went 2-for-3 with 2 doubles, Rowland went 2-for-3, while Dalton Prough, Tremper, Tennis, senior Larry Walters al went 1-for-3 and Allen was 1-for-2.
Allen pitched a complete, 5 inning game, striking out 3 and walking one while scattering 5 hits on 66 pitches.
The win improves the Hornets' record to 7-7. The team will be back in action on Wednesday, May 11 on the road against Williamson.
