The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team lost the opening game of the Muncy Rotary Tournament 45-37 to Hughesville on Friday, December 4.
The Lady Hornets struggled to score on the night, but trailed by a point entering the fourth quarter. Senior Jada Jackson fouled out early in the fourth quarter and the girls struggled keeping control of the ball. Hughesville then blew the game open as they outscored Wellsboro 18-11 to pull away for the win on multiple easy layups and shot 10-for-11 from the foul line as Wellsboro was forced to foul.
Sophomore Lizzie Poirier led Wellsboro with 13 points on the night as Hughesville held seniors Sarah Ingerick, Jackson, and Alexa Singer to two points each. Junior Jessica Grab was the next leading scorer with 8 points, sophomore Rachael Tuttle and junior Janessa Davis each had four points, and junior Autum Kitajima added the final two points.
"It was a hard fought game and the girls played hard tonight," said head coach John Davis. "I give Hughesville a lot of credit, they contained Sarah and Jada all night and are a very tough, physical team. We'll look to bounce back tomorrow night."
The loss starts the Lady Hornets' season off at 0-1. The team will take on Northwest Area in the consolation game tonight at 6:30 p.m.
