The Wellsboro JV baseball team dropped two games in a double header to the Athens Wildcats.
In the first game, Wellsboro lost 7-1. Athens jumped out to a three run lead in the top of the first. They would score six runs in the third, and tack on one more in the top of the fifth to give them the lead.
Freshman Johnny Rowland threw five inning for the Hornets giving up seven runs, three of them earned. He struck out eight Athens batters and worked his way around the bases to score the Hornets only run in the game. Freshman Brandon Plume added two hits on the day, with Freshmen Dalton Prough, Rowland and Brent English adding hits for Wellsboro.
In the second game of the day, Wellsboro gave up four runs in the top of the first inning on the backs of errors on the Wellsboro defense. The offense fought right back scoring five runs in the bottom of the inning. The offense capitalized on an Athens error as Rowland, Parker Mann and Brandon Plume added hits in the inning.
Athens would plate one run in the second and two in the fourth to give them a 7-6 lead heading into the bottom of the final inning of regulation.
In the bottom of the inning, Rowland worked his way around the bases to score the tying run. English was called out for not tagging on a controversial play. Athens would plate one run in the top of the next inning, as Athens struck out the side to end the game with Athens winning, 8-7.
The JV team will be back in action Tuesday, May 5 as they travel to Mansfield.
