The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team's win streak came to an end as they lost 10-5 to Athens on Wednesday, May 6.
The Hornets struggled right from the beginning as Junior Joe Allen couldn't record an out in the first inning. Juniors James Mundy and Dawson Prough and Freshman Johnny Rowland all pitched in relief. Combined, the Hornets gave up 14 walks and hit one batter and couldn't recover.
"There is no way to defend 15 free passes," said head coach Philip Prough. "Our success formula is simple. Keep walks minimal and we'll win. We couldn't do that tonight and still only lost by 5."
Freshman Dalton Prough was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Dawson Prough was 2-for-3 with a triple, and Allen was 1-for-3. Junior Nick Tremper also had a hit and scored two runs.
"We made good contact against 2 good pitchers tonight," Prough continued. "We only had four strikeouts against hard throwing. I'm pleased with our plate approach. Athens made two or three great plays in the field to shut down our rallies as well. Sometimes you have games like that. We'll let it go, focus on Mansfield and try to start a new win streak."
The loss drops the Hornets' record to 11-5 (6-3 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Friday, May 8 as they host Mansfield.
