The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team lost to Athens 7-1 on Monday, October 19, their second loss to the NTL Champion Wildcats.
Athens scored four goals in the first half and three in the second half. Athens' Ryan Segar scored four goals on the night to lead the Wildcats, while junior Josiah Hill scored the Hornets only goal with under a minute left to play to avoid the shutout.
Junior Casey Hoover made 8 saves in goal.
"It was a very disappointing day for all involved," said head coach John Shaffer. "I did not do a good enough job of getting the boys ready for a big game and that lead to a variety of individual and collective breakdowns. Against a very good team like Athens if you make the mistakes that we did you will get punished, and we were put to the sword. Now its on the coaching staff to create a plan that will allow the boys to regroup and have a great playoff run."
Wellsboro won the JV game 1-0 to improve their record to 8-0-2 on the year. With the Varsity loss, the team falls to 14-2-1 (10-2-1 NTL). The team will be back in action for their final regular season game on Tuesday, October 22 as they host Northeast Bradford.
