The Wellsboro Middle School basketball teams continued to increase their winning streaks with wins over Williamson Tuesday night.
The girls improved their streak to nine games with a 28-18 victory. Lizzie Poirier led all scorers with 11 points on 4 of 6 shooting and a 3 of 4 night at the free throw line. Rachael Tuttle added 8 points and 11 rebounds, while Brianne Keane added 7 points and Alyssa Yungwirth had 2 points.
"We had a very competitive game tonight and Williamson deserves a lot of credit for their play," said head coach Darrell Morris. "We led throughout the game, but Williamson kept coming back, cutting the lead to 3 points once in the 3rd quarter.
"I was very pleased with how our team responded to adversity. We had too many turnovers and foul trouble, but we made plays when we needed to late on offense, and we had some key defensive stops in the fourth quarter."
The win improves the girls to 15-3 on the year.
The boys team has now won seven games in a row after beating Williamson, 34-11. The Hornets held a 14-8 margin at the half, but came alive in the second as they held Williamson to just three points.
Cole Cavanaugh led the team with 8 points, Nic Ingerick, Quinn Henry, and Alex Kozuhowski all had 6 points.
The win improves the boys to 13-3 on the year. Both teams will be back in action on Friday, March 28 as they host Mansfield.
