The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team opened the Mansfield University Christmas Tournament with a 75-34 loss to Binghamton on Saturday, December 27.
The Lady Hornets started sluggish as they missed numerous wide-open shots and turned the ball over while Binghamton jumped out to a 13-2 lead as they were able to captialize off of those turnovers. Wellsboro would settle down a little in the second quarter as they managed to score 19 points, but still trailed 38-21 at the half.
Binghamton pulled away in the third quarter as they scored 20 points and held the Lady Hornets to just eight as the turnover bug once again bit Wellsboro. Both teams started rotating in younger players in the fourth quarter but Binghamton still outscored Wellsboro 17-5 in the final frame to claim the victory.
Junior Sarah Ingerick led the team with 12 points and four assists. Junior Alexa Singer scored six points, Junior Jada Jackson scored five and grabbed nine rebounds, Freshman Rachael Tuttle added four points, Junior Jessica Grab had three, and Senior Peyton Wilson and Sophomore Janessa Davis each pitched in two points.
With the loss, the Lady Hornets fall to 4-3 (0-1 NTL Division 1). The team will take on Bryn Mawr from Baltimore, MD later this afternoon in the consolation game.
