In the opening round of the new NTL Showdown, the Wellsboro Varsity boys basketball team defeated Mansfield 78-48 on Friday night.
The Hornets jumped out to a 13-7 first quarter lead then pushed it to 29-18 at the half. Mansfield was still in striking distance after three, down 49-34, but the Hornets scored 29 points in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Four Hornets were scored in double figures, led by Sophomore Dawson Prough and Junior Michael Pietropola with 20 points each. Senior Joey Doganiero added 14 points and three assists, Junior Kieron Smethers had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds and also blocked three shots.
Rounding out the scoring was Senior Dylan Prough with six points, Freshman Brandon Lamphier with three, and Junior Jake Mitchell with two.
Now the Hornets take on Towanda, for the third time this season, in the title game of the NTL Showdown tonight at 8:30 p.m. in Mansfield University's Decker Gym.
