The Wellsboro Varsity boys basketball team started 2014 on a down note, as they lost to St. John Neumann, 65-45.
The Hornets were looking to rebound following a loss to Lewisburg in the championship game of the Wellsboro Hornets Sports Booster Club Christmas Tournament, but fell behind the undefeated Knights 12-6 in the first quarter and never recovered.
The Hornets were outscored 19-15 in the second quarter, 20-11 in the third, and 14-13 in the fourth. Three Knights scored in double figures on the night, led by Alize Johnson with 19 points. Richard Allen had 16 and Nasza Short pitched in 14.
Junior Michael Pietropola had a game-high 20 points on six three-pointers. Senior Joey Doganiero and Sophomore Dawson Prough had 8 points each, Senior Dylan Prough had 7, and Juniors Jake Mitchell and Kieron Smethers each added one point.
In the J.V. game, the Hornets fell to Neumann, 56-21. Freshman Brandon Lamphier led the Hornets with 10 points on the night.
With the loss, the Hornets fall to 5-3. The team will be back in action on Friday, January 3 as they travel to Liberty.
