The Wellsboro Varsity boys basketball team outscored Athens 18-13 in the fourth quarter to come away with a 54-51 victory on Wednesday night.
The Hornets trailed 14-13 after the first quarter but scored 19 points in the second to take a 32-25 lead going into halftime. Athens rebounded in the third to take a two point lead going into the final frame before the Hornets regrouped for the win.
The Green Hornets were led by Senior Dylan Prough with 18 and Joey Doganiero finished with 14. Doganiero had two threes and eight points in the big fourth-quarter.
Junior Kieron Smethers had nine points, Sophomore Dawson Prough with seven, and Junior Michael Pietropola finished with six points.
Dawson Prough had three assists and four boards and Dylan Prough had a double-double with 11 rebounds, with two assists and two steals. Doganiero had six boards and Pietropola had four boards, while Smethers had three boards, two assists, a steal and a block.
In the J.V. game the Hornets lost 60-27. Freshman Brandon Lamphier led the team with 7 points.
With the win, the Varsity team improves to 13-5 (5-2 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Friday, January 31 as they host Troy.
