The Wellsboro Varsity boys basketball team picked up their sixth consecutive victory as they defeated Liberty, 54-34 on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets started a little slow, but Sophomore Dawson Prough got the team rolling as he scored the first four points of the game. Wellsboro held a 14-4 lead after the first quarter and 28-14 at halftime.
The Hornets turned up the heat in the second half as they held Liberty to only 20 points to earn the victory.
Senior Joey Doganiero led the Hornets with 14 points and Senior Dylan Prough had 13 and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Junior Kieron Smethers had nine points, Junior Michael Pietropola and Dawson Prough each had eight points, and Junior Jake Mitchell had two.
In the J.V. game the Hornets dropped a close game, 40-37. The team had a last second chance to tie up the game but Freshman Brandon Lamphier's shot came up short. Lamphier would lead all scorers with 18 points.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 12-4 (4-1 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Monday, January 27 as they travel to Towanda.
