The Wellsboro Varsity baseball team picked up their second straight win as they defeated Wyalusing 14-8 on Wednesday, April 23.
The Hornets built a 12-1 lead entering the the top of the fifth inning but then Wyalusing scored four runs to cut it to 12-5. The Hornets would get two back when in the seventh the Rams struck again, scoring three more, but couldn't get any closer.
Senior Brandon Owlett went 4-for-5 with two doubles to lead Wellsboro at the plate and Sophomore Dawson Prough continued his hot streak with a 2-for-4 performance with a double, 3-run home run, and 4 RBIs. Seniors Cody DeHaas was 3-for-3, Brian Doty was 2-for-4 with a home run, double, and 3 RBIs, and Dylan Prough added a hit with 2 RBIs. Sophomore Nick Tremper had a double, Junior Brett Kendrick, and Sophomores Joe Allen and James Mundy also had hits.
"We continue to hit well and are seeing the ball better," said head coach Philip Prough. "There's no swinging bunt hits or bloop hits and that's a good sign for us. The lower part of our line up is starting to put together good at bats too, which is critical for our success. Our top hitters are doing what they do best. But we'll need the bottom of the line up to produce if we expect to win a NTL title.
"Brian and Dawson continue to hit the ball very hard. Brian has made improvements on curveballs too," Prough continued. "When he's relaxed, he's a tough out. And Dawson continues being locked in. Hitting three home runs in as many games is impressive. Although we can't rely on that happening every game, we'll enjoy it while we can. What's more important to me, is that his defense has greatly improved over the past 3 games."
Dylan Prough pitched 4 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking two, to earn the win. Allen came on in relief to close out the game.
With the win the Hornets improve to 5-4 (2-1 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Friday, April 25 as they host Athens.
