Senior Joey Doganiero qualified for the PIAA State Track and Field Meet next weekend in the 400m after a second place finish at Districts on Saturday, May 17.
Doganiero ran a 51.04, beating out rival J.J. Walker from North Penn by .02 seconds.
The senior has dropped his time over the last two weeks as he ran 51.23 at the NTL Championships one week ago. Doganiero credits his improvements to his training with volunteer coach Aaron Singer.
"The training I've done the past couple of weeks as been more speed training," Doganiero said. "We started off the season building endurance but now at the end of the year we're working on speed and finishing the race and that has definitely helped me improve my time."
Doganiero was the only member of the boys team to qualify, but the Hornets, who finished 15th overall as a team with 19 points, had a good showing against the best-of-the-best from District IV.
Senior Dan Brooks was 5th in the 100m (11.65) and 5th in the 200m (23.63), Senior Blair Carson was 15th in the 110m hurdles (17.93), Junior Jack Chambers was 7th in the 300m hurdles (42.77), Sophomore Anthony Cooper tied for 10th in the pole vault (11' 6"), Senior Dylan Prough was 8th in the long jump (19' 6.75"), Junior Michael Pietropola was 20th in the long jump (18' 4.75"), and Sophomore Rich Tardieu was 9th in the triple jump (39' 3.75").
Senior Blake Gamble was 10th in the shot put (43' 8") and Junior Bill Lupkowski was 16th in the discus (82' 3").
Doganiero now turns his focus to the state meet next week at Shippensburg University.
"I'm looking to compete and do my best. This meet is the highest you can go in high school and I want to have fun and take advantage of the moment," condluded Doganiero.
WellsboroAthletics.com would like to congratulate Joey on qualifying for states, and wish him the best of luck at the meet.
