The Wellsboro Varsity boys soccer team picked up an NTL win over Troy, 2-1, on Saturday night.
The Hornets got on the board first when Junior Gillan Alafoginis converted on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute to go up 1-0. The Hornets added their second goal in the 63rd minute when Sophomore Quinten Curneir scored off an assist from Senior Dan Brooks.
Troy would score in the 69th minute to bring the game to 2-1, but the Hornets' defense held strong the rest of the game to capture the victory.
"I am very happy for the boys," said head coach John Shaffer. "They battled and while the game was not pretty they did what they had to in order to get our first win over Troy in program history. Quinten scored a wonder goal to get the win and Jake Mitchell made several great saves in the last 10 minutes to preserve the lead."
Junior Jake Mitchell recorded 7 saves in goal for the Hornets.
With the win, the team improves to 10-3 (10-3 NTL). The team will be back in action on Tuesday, October 8 as they host Northeast Bradford.
