The Wellsboro Varsity baseball team rallied to defeat rival Mansfield 6-5 Monday night in Wellsboro.
After trailing 4-0 in the 2nd inning, the Hornet bats came alive to tie up the game at 4-4, and later 5-5 as they entered the final inning. Junior Dylan Prough had the game-winning walk-off hit in the bottom of the 7th inning to lift the Hornets to the victory. Prough's hit to left field allowed young brother Dawson Prough to score for the second time on the night.
Dylan Prough had 1 hit, scored two runs and had two RBI's, Senior Luke Rudy had two hits and two RBI's, Dawson Prough had two hits and scored two runs and Senior Ben Shaw had a hit.
Senior Connor Coolidge worked 1 1/3 innings on the mound, Senior Matt Reese had 4 2/3 innings of work, and Junior Brandon Owlett pitched one inning.
"We came out flat tonight and looked like a team that's only been on a field twice. It really showed. But we battled back," said head coach Philip Prough. "Our hitting will keep us in many games and tonight was evidence of that. Defensively, we are seeing improvement. In particular, at our catcher's position with Ben Shaw. He's worked hard and it's paying dividends for our team."
With the win, the Hornets improve their 2013 season record to 2-0 (1-0 NTL West). The team will be back in action on Wednesday, April 10 as they travel to Cowanesque Valley.
