The Wellsboro Varsity boys soccer team's season ended in the first round of PIAA state playoffs Tuesday night with a 7-1 loss to Biglerville.
The District 3 champion Canners erupted for six second-half goals on 23 shot attempts.
The Hornets found themselves trailing 1-0 early in the first half before the wheels fell off in the second. Biglerville's Matt Cellucci got the onslaught started, cashing in on an assist from Koby Griest and the Canners to up 2-0 with 28:15 to go. Less than five minutes later, Paulino Rico scored off a feed in front from Dylan Sharrah and the rout was on.
Griest kept the Canners' run going with a tally with 16:56 to go off a feed from Sharrah and it was 4-0.
In a blistering 4-minute span, Adrian Lupian chested in a rebound in front and Caleb Taylor had a pair of goals, including a penalty kick with 8:14 to play.
Sophomore Sean Dooley scored the lone goal for the Hornets to prevent the shut out off an assist from Freshman Josiah Hill.
Junior Jake Mitchell made saves in goal for the Hornets on the night.
With the loss, the Hornets end their historical season at 17-6 (14-4 NTL).
