The Wellsboro Varsity boys soccer team knocked off undefeated Sayre 2-1 Thursday night.
Sayre got on the board first as Seth Murrelle sent across to Austin Rowe for the game's first goal at 36:06. However, Wellsboro answered at 31:00 of the second half when Junior Gillan Alafoginis scored off a direct kick. The game winner came with 13:12 left when Sophomore Joe Allen scored off an assist from Tucker Worthington.
"It was a great win by the boys over a very talented Sayre team," head coach John Shaffer said. "I am so proud at their ability to respond to going down a goal. A great free kick by Gillan to tie it up and a perfect corner kick for the winner.
"I need to point out the great play of our goalie Jake Mitchell and the back four. It was an overall team effort."
With the win, the Hornets improve to 5-2 (4-2 NTL). The team will be back in action on Saturday, September 21 as they travel to Williamson.
