The Wellsboro Varsity girls soccer team picked up a league win Monday night against Wyalusing.
The team was held scoreless in the first half, but rallied from a 1-0 deficit to claim the 2-1 victory. With 7:43 remaining in the game, Sophomore Lauren Bleggi received a pass from Freshman Lindsey Graver and beat the defense along the sideline and carried to the middle of the field where she put the ball on goal as the goal keeper came out.
Just a few seconds later, Sophomore Jennifer Evans scored the winning goal as she shot the ball from the middle of the goal and finished with a shot opposite of the keeper.
"We got off to an extremely slow start the entire first half," said head coach Carolyn Mitchell. "We were able to get some shots off, but didn't do our job creating solid attacks. Wyalusing continued with great pressure at the beginning of the half.
"Their first goal seemed to really motivate the girls. We began to create pressure and found ourselves with the ball in our attacking half. I'm proud of the girls for pushing themselves instead of giving up after Wyalusing's first goal," concluded Mitchell.
In JV action, the Hornets beat Wyalusing 3-1.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 5-5-1. The team will be back in action on Wednesday, October 3 as they host Athens.
