The Wellsboro Varsity boys soccer team tied Athens 1-1 tonight in Wellsboro.
Sophomore Gillan Alafoginis scored Wellsboro's goal off a penalty kick in the 58th minute. Overall, the Hornets recorded 17 shots, 10 of which were on goal. Sophomore Goalie Jake Mitchell recorded 10 saves.
"This was a big step for the program, it is the first time in the ten year history of the program that we were not defeated by Athens," said head coach John Shaffer. "With that said the boys are disappointed because we felt we were the better team and controlled large parts of the game.
"Our field is a big home field advantage as it is narrower then Athens and not as smooth. Athens style of play was not well suited to our field. Hopefully this game will give us momentum going into the second part of the season."
In JV action, the Hornets tied Athens, 0-0. With the tie, the Hornets are now 3-6-1 overall (3-1 NTL West). The team will be back in action on Wednesday, September 26 as they host Troy.
