The Wellsboro Varsity boys soccer team defeated Liberty tonight on the road, 2-1.
After giving up and early goal, the Hornets rallied and were able to put pressure on Liberty and earned us two penalty kicks in the final minute of the first half. Sophomore Gillan Alafoginis used his club soccer experience to calmly roll both into the net to put the Hornets on top for good.
In the second half, the team played tough, hard-nosed defense to hold Liberty scoreless. Sophomore Goalie Jake Mitchell recorded 10 saves in the victory.
This was a big win for us going to a tough place and coming away with the result," said head coach John Shaffer.
In JV action, the Hornets fell 4-1. Senior Josh Kennedy scored the only goal.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 3-5 overall (3-0 NTL West). The team will be back in action on Thursday, September 20 as they host Northern Potter.
