The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team kept their shut out streak alive as they defeated Sayre 1-0 on Wednesday, September 10.
The Hornets didn't get on the board until the 59th minute when Senior Gillan Alafoginis scored on a penalty kick. Wellsboro was able to keep Sayre scoreless the remainder of the game for their fourth consecutive win.
"This was a very hard fought game," said head coach John Shaffer. "After the NTL championship game and District semi-final last year we knew the game would be very competitive.
"Sayre controlled a lot of the first half, limiting us to only 2 shots," continued Shaffer. "In the second half we started to pass the ball and just relax and we created a lot of chances. Gillan slid the penalty kick into the next and then the back four and Jake Mitchell made it stand up. I'm very proud of how the boys played composed in the second half and focused on their game."
Senior Jake Mitchell made 11 saves in net on the night as Sayre out shout Wellsboro 13-9.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 4-0 (4-0 NTL). The team will be back in action on Saturday, September 13 as they travel to Towanda.
